A Sense of Place, detail

The focus of this work brings layers of various materials together to underscore the significance of potentiality, and the profound meaning in basic shapes. Circles represent the infinite, squares are our physicality on the planet, the triangle equals strength and support, and feminine and masculine energies.

The repurposed/well-travelled materials infer history and present a pieced-together medley of cultures. The slow process of embroidery (Kantha-ish) technique I used is a practice in mindfulness. Together, they bring A Sense of Place.

Micro-Study- Beneath the Surface, detail

Imagine the activity inside just one of Nature’s networks - what we can’t see from the outside, - beneath the surface must be curious and amazing. The painted bisque clay becomes the beings and the red beaded crystals are the plasma floating within it

Curious Anomalies, detail

When faced with adversity that thwarts the norm, beings adapt, grow and incorporate what’s been learned into our lives; it becomes part of us; a consciousness-raising.

(Weaving, wet- and needle-felting, hand embroidery. Materials include linen, wool cotton, denim.)

Roads to the Sun

With its map-like layout of symbols, this work is crossed with stitches and dotted by beaded details. It’s a haptic sketch of many paths, each defined by embellished shapes - circles and squares - and lines of color for our eyes to follow. And, perhaps for our minds to embrace a reflective optimism that all roads lead to the sun.

A Slice of Life, detail

The windowpane pattern underscores all things interlaced and connected. Looking up through the grid, there’s a vast textural layout of space with criss-crossed layers of deep blues and little cosmoses here and there filled with celestial activity. And, looking down through the grid there are suggestions of underwater islands, deep caverns and maybe old river roads. However you see it, there’s evidence of a slice of life.

Unabashed Point of View, detail

This work is my celebration of color. I used overlapping and heavily hand-stitched sari silk ribbons with a hand-dyed organza silk ‘mask’ which revealed different tones of color coming through cut out circle and square shapes. As I worked with the monolithic rectangles, I realized they worked not horizontally as the rest of the ribbons, but vertically, instead ‘standing up’, where they were the ballast that grounded the entire piece. In this moment I realized I made a powerful celebration of all colors.

Eco Echoes, detail

This work explores and celebrates the relationship between us and our surrounding environs, combining colors from our natural world and including textures that project an energetic and satisfying nod to our fundamental ecology.
